The Foundations of Astrology
Astrology operates on a fundamental principle: "As above, so below." This ancient axiom suggests that the movements of celestial bodies correspond to patterns in human life—not through direct causation, but through meaningful synchronicity.
How Astrology Works
Your birth chart (also called a natal chart) is essentially a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment and location of your birth. This celestial blueprint captures the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets relative to the twelve signs of the zodiac and the twelve houses of experience.
The birth chart is divided into three main components:
- •Planets - Represent different drives and energies within you (what)
- •Signs - Show how these energies express themselves (how)
- •Houses - Indicate the areas of life where these energies manifest (where)
Types of Astrology
There are several major astrological traditions:
- •Western Astrology - Uses the tropical zodiac based on seasons
- •Vedic Astrology - Uses the sidereal zodiac based on fixed stars
- •Chinese Astrology - Based on lunar cycles and animal symbols
In this course, we focus on Western tropical astrology, the most common system in Europe and the Americas.
Astrology as a Tool
Modern astrology is best understood as a psychological and spiritual tool. It doesn't predict fixed events but illuminates:
- •Your core personality traits and tendencies
- •Natural talents and potential challenges
- •Relationship patterns and compatibility
- •Optimal timing for important decisions
- •Cycles of personal growth and transformation
Think of astrology as a weather forecast for your inner life—it shows the climate, but you still choose how to dress and where to go.
